Welcome to Birdlife Zimbabwe

BLZ was founded in 1951 as the Rhodesian Ornithological Society then a branch of the Southern African Ornithological Society (now BirdLife South Africa).  The ROS was reconstituted as the Ornithological Association of Zimbabwe (OAZ) in 1981.  In 1998 a strategic planning workshop was held to decide the future direction of the OAZ, its fundamental purpose and its major objectives.  The OAZ became a Partner Designate to BirdLife International (BLI) later that year.  BLI is a global partnership of almost 100 NGOs that have a common interest in the conservation of birds and biodiversity.  We share its ideas and values and participate in its strategies and programmes.  Our UK partner, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds assists us with funding both for core activities and for our education programme.  In order to better reflect its new emphasis on conservation, OAZ changed its name to BirdLife Zimbabwe in 1999.  We became a full member in BirdLife International (BLI) in April 2002.

Our major objectives are to conserve birds and their habitats, to increase awareness and enjoyment of birds through education and training and to use and develop a proven and professional base for the research and study of birds and their habitats.

We would like to thank MWeb Zimbabwe for hosting our web site as a public service
